Sonja Oković has a master’s degree in Speech-Language Therapy, is a registered psychotherapist, and graduated from the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Zagreb in 2011. Since 2011, she has worked as a speech-language therapist at the SUVAG Polyclinic in the Department for Medical Rehabilitation and Education of Children. In 2018, she completed an educational program in Child and Adolescent Integrative Psychotherapy at the Institute for Psychotherapy and Counselling of Children, Youth and Family (Institut D.O.M), under the mentorship of Prof. Dubravka Kocijan-Hercigonja, PhD; Prof. Gordana Buljan Flander, PhD; and Mirjana Graovac, PhD. Upon completion of the program, Sonja Oković received a European licence as an integrative psychotherapist for children and adolescents. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Law in the field of social work, focusing on issues of language comprehension in children at institutions and children within the family. She completed the General Verbotonal Seminar I: Verbotonal Approach to Diagnosis and Rehabilitation of Hearing and Speech; and General Verbotonal Seminar II: Rehabilitation of Hearing Impaired Persons and Persons with Language and Speech Difficulties, in 2011. Oković participated in the standardization of the TROG-2:HR test (a test for Croatian grammar comprehension). As both an active and passive participant at many national and international conferences, Sonja continuously gains new insights which she applies to her work.
Sonja Oković is a member of the Croatian Logopedic Association (HLD), the European Network for Social and Emotional Competence (ENSEC), and works as a volunteer within the scope of the UNICEF project: ‘the first three years of life are the most important.’
Oković is the author and co-author or several professional and scientific papers. She wrote a chapter in the 9th edition of “Godine prve zašto su važne” (the First Years: why they are so important); and received a co-author credit for “Preventivna i socijalna pedijatrija” (Preventive and Social Paediatrics). She is also a regular contributor and advisor for the miss7.24sata.hr and životistilrtl.hr websites, as well as an expert for LittleDot (littledotapp.com).
Her professional interests focus on speech-language disorders with emphasis on speech dysfunction (stuttering and varied rates of speech), emotional difficulties, ADHD/ADD, trauma in children, family therapy, behavioural disorders, difficulties in social functioning and communication, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, phobias, and music therapy.
Sonja has a daughter and loves to travel during her spare time. Her second love is music. She has won significant awards for singing and playing the piano. She is especially proud of the silver medal she won at the World Choir Games in China as part of the “Čarobna frula” (Magic Flute) Croatian Music Society; with whom she performed throughout Europe and around the world.
